St Maria Goretti Catholic Primary School

English Statement of Intent

At St Maria Goretti, we believe that our high quality English curriculum will develop and inspire our children to become confident, independent learners who have a love of reading, writing and discussion. The English National Curriculum programme of study and The Early Years Framework are the basis for our curriculum and this is enriched by learning opportunities linked to high quality stories and texts. We place great emphasis on teaching our children to read and developing their comprehension skills. We recognise the importance of creating a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly and accurately and adapt their language for a range of contexts. Through our exciting English curriculum we also want to develop essential speaking and listening skills and for our children to learn to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and communicate with others effectively.

Implementation

Please see the reading, phonics and writing pages for how implement this in our school.

At St Maria Goretti School, we are using the Lancashire Key Learning documents to support with planning and sequencing children's progression and learning gains. These are key learning statements which;

  • support teachers' planning and address gaps in learning
  • help teachers focus on where children are in their learning
  • guide teachers' judgements as to whether children are on track to meet year group expectations and how much progress is being made over time.
