A very warm welcome to the Maple class page.
I am your class teacher Mrs. Nuttall and I look forward to working with all of you throughout the year, helping you to learn, develop and grow through our varied and exciting curriculum.
In our class we have 3 fantastic teaching assistants who are in school every day, we have Mrs. Towers, Miss Kaur and Miss Hawkins. They work very hard to support and encourage your learning in so many different ways.
Together we will ensure that all the children in year 1 have access to reading books and we will change these every week, when they are placed in the basket within the classroom.  In addition to your home reading we will ensure that every child is heard reading at least once a week.
We will learn phonics every day and develop our understanding of phonic knowledge in order to develop both our reading and writing skills.  We will also learn lots of new skills in maths including sorting, counting, addition and subtraction, time, money and we will even begin to learn our times tables in the summer term focusing on the 10, 5 and 2 times tables.  In science we will do lots of work on the seasons and will carry out a seasons walk 4 times throughout the year and we will study the changes that happen due to the seasons. We will also cover animals, including humans, materials and our senses. In year 1 you will begin your computing journey at SMG and will be able to use the computers and learn new skills including coding, online safety and graphics. In geography you will learn the different continents of the world and learn all about the United Kingdom that we live in. We will also look at maps of Preston and how things have changed over time. In history we look at toys from the past and present and see how they have changed and we have an exciting study of the Great Fire of London. At SMG we love to learn about Jesus and hear many of the different stories from the bible.  In year 1 we will learn all about the stories of Jesus's birth and His death and how these impact us in our Catholic life. We will also study a variety of prayers and learn their meaning to us. In year 1 we love to learn hymns to help us praise God and show our faith and trust in Him.
We have PE twice every week on Tuesday and Friday afternoons and a full PE must be in school for this lesson.  We will earn new skills and techniques in rolling and throwing a ball, gymnastics, dance, kicking a ball and using a bat or racket to strike a ball.

We are looking forward to seeing you all bloom and develop in your journey in year 1.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch throughout the year, if you have any questions or worries.
Kindest Regards
Mrs Nuttall and the Year 1 team.

At SMG we are committed to providing the children with a strong RE curriculum and have a strong sense of Catholic ethos in everything that we do.

In Year 1 we follow an RE scheme recommended by the diocese called the Vine and the Branches.  This ensures that the children are having a full RE curriculum that covers stories from the Bible, relevant at certain times of the year.  The units that we study can be clearly seen on our yearly overview and on each half termly overview more detail is provided.
In addition to this the children are regularly taken to church to celebrate various feast days and Year 1 usually take some sort of active role in the Mass such as a procession to start the Mass or a song at the front of the church.  You are more than welcome to attend the Mass with us and see your child enjoying the worship time.
